Request an emergency medication supply

1. Request via NHS 111

You can request an emergency supply of regular medicines (excluding antibiotics and painkillers/controlled drugs) by visiting NHS 111 online.

2. Select your pharmacy

Send your referral to us for fast, friendly and caring service from our expert team. We actively monitor for referrals and we may call you to confirm further details. You can always-walk in if you need the supply urgently.

3. Call in and Collect

Our pharmacists will assess your request, and if suitable, we will issue a short-term supply of your medication until you can get your regular prescription.

Supply is subject to eligibility and assessment by a Pharmacist, including an evidence check to assess you’ve been prescribed these medicines in the past. We will not supply medicines where there is a risk of misuse or where clinical assessment is required – such as antibiotics, certain painkillers or controlled drugs.

Important things to know:

Eligibility: This service is for patients who have been previously prescribed the medication, and have a genuine urgent need.
Charges: Standard NHS prescription charges apply unless you are exempt from paying.
Controlled Drugs: Controlled Drugs (like strong painkillers or ADHD medication) cannot be supplied through this service. You must contact your GP or the Out of Hours service for these.
Antibiotic or Acute Medicines: we cannot supply antibiotics or short-term medicines with this service. Our Pharmacy First service may be able to help you with a range of common conditions, including treatment if appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions.

Can I just walk-in for an emergency supply?

All patients are directed to make an emergency medicines supply request via NHS 111. You can use the online service to send your request straight away, or you can also call NHS 111.

How much medication will I receive?

The NHS emergency service is designed to bridge the gap until you can contact your GP. Typically, the pharmacist will provide enough medication for 5 to 30 days, depending on the type of medicine and the nature of the urgency.

Is there a cost for this service?

The clinical assessment by NHS 111 and the pharmacist is free. However, if a medication is supplied, you will be required to pay the standard NHS prescription charge per item unless you are medically or financially exempt.

What if I need a Controlled Drug?

Pharmacies and cannot provide emergency supplies of Controlled Drugs (such as strong painkillers or ADHD medication) without a valid prescription. In these cases, 111 will usually direct you to the relevant Out of Hours service.
