We administer the updated Comirnaty® XFG mRNA vaccine from Pfizer/BioNTech. As SARS-CoV-2 evolves, vaccine formulations are systematically updated to match actively circulating lineage shifts. The XFG strain (a recombinant subvariant of the Omicron lineage, sometimes referred to as the “Stratus” variant) emerged in early 2025 and rapidly became a major dominant strain driving COVID-19 cases in the UK.
Older vaccine generations were engineered against earlier variants and offer significantly lower neutralising antibody responses against modern mutations. The updated Comirnaty® XFG vaccine specifically targets the key spike protein mutations found in XFG and its closely related sublineages. By receiving this updated formulation, your immune system gains direct, highly effective protection against today’s predominant circulating virus rather than outdated strains.
Yes, in terms of strain protection, both pathways use updated variant-adapted vaccines targeting the XFG antigen.
- Private Vaccination Clinic: We administer the Pfizer/BioNTech Comirnaty® XFG vaccine for our private appointments.
- NHS Seasonal Programme: For patients eligible for free vaccination under the NHS Autumn/Winter programme, our pharmacies supply the Moderna Spikevax® XFG vaccine.
While the brand manufacturer differs slightly between the two streams, both vaccines are mRNA-based and updated to the exact same XFG variant to ensure peak protection across both services.
We can provide Private COVID vaccinations to anyone who:
- Is aged 12 years and over
- Is not otherwise eligible for an NHS COVID Vaccination (we can provide these too – find out more here).
- Hasn’t already received a COVID Vaccination this season.

We recommend waiting until you have fully recovered from a COVID-19 infection (usually 2–4 weeks). You should also typically wait at least 3 months since your last COVID-19 vaccination. Our pharmacist will confirm the ideal timing during your consultation.
NHS COVID Vaccination is available in Autumn/Winter for the following age groups:
- People aged 75 or over by 30th March 2027
- People aged 6 months to 74 years and have a weakened immune system because of a health condition or treatment
- People who live in a care home for older adults

Side effects are generally mild and temporary, similar to previous COVID-19 vaccines or the flu jab. They can include pain or soreness at the injection site, headache, fatigue, or mild fever. Our pharmacist will discuss these fully before your dose.
