Everything You Need to Know.

Blood Pressure: an important metric.

Blood pressure is the force of your blood pushing against the walls of your arteries (blood vessels) as your heart pumps. It’s measured using two numbers — systolic (the pressure when your heart beats) and diastolic (the pressure when your heart rests between beats). A ‘perfect’ reading in adults is usually around 120/80 mmHg, but this can vary with age, health conditions and risk factors.

High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure (hypertension) often has no symptoms but increases your risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney problems. That’s why checking it regularly is important — even if you feel fine.

Read more about blood pressure and it’s impact on your cardiovascular health by following the link to the British Heart Foundation website, or visit us for a check today.

We accept GP Referrals

Your GP Practice can quickly refer you to our pharmacies for fast, efficient Blood Pressure checks.

These NHS checks are completely free, and you can have them done quickly and locally, without needing to book a GP slot, or fork out for your own blood pressure monitor. We’ll record your results and share them with your GP if needed, helping to build a clearer picture of your health.

You can simply walk in if your GP has referred you to us, or bring along a referral letter — we’ll take care of the rest.

Further Investigations to Support You

If your reading is raised, we may recommend 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM). This involves wearing a cuff at home that measures your blood pressure throughout the day and night, giving a more accurate picture.

It helps confirm whether you truly have high blood pressure, especially if your reading was elevated in the pharmacy due to stress or nerves.

We’ll arrange a convenient time to fit you with the monitor and loan it to you for 24 hours. Once the monitoring is complete, we’ll review the results with you and provide further advice, including a referral to your GP if needed.

Getting you the care you need.

If your results suggest ongoing monitoring or treatment is needed, we can refer you to your GP. We’ll provide a summary of your readings and any investigations we’ve carried out, helping your GP pick up from where we leave off. This ensures you get timely, joined-up care with minimal delays.

If we detect concerningly high blood pressure, we’ll refer you to your GP for a same-day assessment. Outside normal hours, we may advise you to contact an out-of-hours service for urgent support.

Blood Pressure Management

It’s important to get on top of high blood pressure, to safeguard your future health. If you’re diagnosed with high blood pressure, treatment may include:

  • Lifestyle changes like reducing salt, stopping smoking, and exercising more;
  • Medication prescribed by your GP to help bring your blood pressure to a healthy range;
  • Ongoing monitoring to make sure your treatment is working.

We don’t prescribe blood pressure medication in-pharmacy, but we help detect issues early and ensure you get the support you need. If initiated on Blood Pressure Medication, we can also provide the NHS New Medicines Service – we’ll review how you’re doing with the new prescription, check for any side effects, and provide ongoing support.
