After your consultation or review, if appropriate we can quickly dispense your medication at the same appointment. No need to wait around or visit another pharmacy – it’s all sorted under one roof.

About Oral Contraception…

There are two main types of oral contraception — the combined pill and the progestogen-only pill (POP). The combined pill contains both oestrogen and progestogen and is usually taken daily for 21 days with a 7-day break. The POP contains only progestogen and is taken at the same time every day without a break. If taken correctly, both options are effective at preventing pregnancy.

What is the best choice for me?

Alternatives to oral contraception include Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptives (LARCs), such as the implant, the intrauterine device (IUD), or intrauterine system (IUS). LARCs are safe, highly effective, and convenient options for long-term contraception. Our pharmacists will always discuss LARCs as part of your consultation, so you can make an informed choice that suits your health and lifestyle.

If starting the pill for the first time, our pharmacist will help you consider and select an appropriate option. Our pharmacist will explain how to take the pill and discuss possible side effects. They can refer you to your GP or sexual health clinic if needed.

What to Expect?

You’ll speak with our pharmacist in a private consultation room. They’ll ask about your health and may check your height, weight and blood pressure.

Safeguarding those under 16 years

We’re sensitive to the needs of young people under 16. Our pharmacists are specially trained to offer non-judgmental advice and support. Where appropriate, we may recommend follow-up with local sexual health services to ensure you have access to ongoing contraception and care.

All staff providing this service will have undertaken Safeguarding Training and are DBS-Checked. Provision of contraceptive services to patients under the age of 16 will be undertaken in-line with national guidelines, and services will only be provided if strict criteria are met.

We respect the privacy and confidentiality of young people accessing our services. Consultations are confidential within the healthcare team. However, if we believe that you or someone else may be at risk of harm, we may need to share information with other professionals such as safeguarding teams or sexual health services to ensure your safety. Whenever possible, we will discuss this with you before taking any action.
