Our NHS Pharmacy Services
Our NHS Services are here to support you – with the vast majority of them free at the point of access, or the cost of your prescriptions.
We offer free NHS blood pressure checks for adults aged 40 and over — with GP referrals accepted for any adult. If needed, we’ll provide home monitoring and forward results to your GP to support early treatment.
The C-Card scheme offers free condoms and sexual health support for young people aged 13–25. After a short, confidential registration with a our trained team, you’ll get a C-Card to collect free supplies from participating sites — including ours.
It’s safe, non-judgmental and free. No appointment required, just call-in to our participating sites.
Get your first or next supply of your Oral Contraceptive Pill at our pharmacies, free of charge.
We provide free Oral Contraceptive Pill initiation or reviews for both the Combined and Progestogen-Only (POP) Pills. After a confidential consultation with one of our expert pharmacists, a supply can be made for up to 6 months’ coverage.
To be eligible to access this service a person must be:
- An individual seeking to be initiated on an Oral Contraceptive (OC), or seeking to obtain a further supply of their ongoing OC:
- Combined oral contraceptive (COC) – age from first period up to and including 49 years of age;
- Progestogen only pill (POP) – age from first period up to and including 54 years.
The Discharge Medicines Service (DMS) helps you manage your medicines safely after leaving hospital. We receive a referral from the hospital, so we’re up to date with any changes and can support you in taking your medicines correctly. If you have any questions, just get in touch.
We offer a friendly and efficient NHS electronic repeat dispensing service at all our pharmacies. For eligible medications, your GP can send us a batch of prescriptions to dispense in instalments — so you can contact us directly for your next supply. Pair this with services like our 24-hour collection point in Morpeth to make managing your prescriptions even easier.
Our pharmacies offer quick, confidential access to emergency contraception without an appointment. Consultations are held in private, and if suitable, the morning after pill can be provided at the same appointment.
The person needing the contraception must attend the consultation. We’ll ask some health questions and offer support or refer you if needed.

Emergency Access to Medicine, When You Need It Most.
We can provide emergency medicines supply, when you’re referred to us from NHS 111 online or through the phone, if you’re unable to get a prescription. With proof the medication is regularly prescribed, we may issue a short-term supply for certain medicines.
This service excludes certain Controlled Drugs and is provided at the pharmacist’s discretion. For urgent access to controlled drugs, contact NHS 111.
All our sites are Healthy Living Pharmacies. We offer advice to support healthier lifestyles and can refer you to further help when needed.
We also run regular Health & Wellbeing campaigns to raise awareness of key health topics and promote the vital role pharmacies play in community care.
Free Lateral Flow Devices for Eligible Patients
Our pharmacies provide free lateral flow tests to NHS-eligible patients, including those who are severely immunocompromised or at high risk of severe COVID-19 illness. This can allow access to COVID-19 treatments, if appropriate, to prevent severe disease.
This service is only for patients with qualifying medical conditions. Please ensure you know the name, address, date of birth, and qualifying medical condition for anyone you’re collecting for. For others, lateral flow kits are available to purchase at all of our pharmacies.
You can return any unused or expired medicines to our pharmacy for safe, free disposal. We accept both prescription and over-the-counter medications. Please let us know if any medicines are controlled drugs, so we can dispose of them properly. Simply bring your unwanted medicines to any of our locations for safe disposal.
We accept medicines from any pharmacy and also take sharps bins for disposal, with replacements available. For more details on our Sharps Container service, please click the corresponding service card.
Our expert Pharmacists and their teams provide free advice and support for illnesses or injuries, offer treatment options, and can refer you to other services if needed. Eligible patients can receive free treatment for some minor ailments through our Minor Ailments Scheme, also called the ‘Think Pharmacy First Service.’
This North East commissioned service allows Pharmacists to diagnose and treat minor illnesses and provide free medication to eligible adults (those entitled to free prescriptions due to low income, their children, and all people aged 60+). Just visit one of our Northumberland pharmacies or contact us with any questions.

When you’re prescribed a medicine for a long-term condition for the first time, our pharmacists are here to help. Through the free NHS-funded New Medicine Service (NMS), we provide extra advice and support to make sure you get the best from your new medicine.
We understand that starting a new treatment can sometimes be challenging. That’s why our team will work with you over several weeks to ensure you use your medicine safely and effectively. If you’re eligible, one of our friendly pharmacists will offer this service when you collect your prescription from us.
We may offer you the service if you’ve been prescribed medication for one of the following conditions:
- Asthma and COPD;
- Depression;
- Diabetes (Type 2);
- Hypertension;
- Hypercholesterolaemia;
- Osteoporosis;
- Gout;
- Glaucoma;
- Epilepsy;
- Parkinson’s disease;
- Urinary incontinence/retention;
- Heart failure;
- Acute coronary syndromes;
- Atrial fibrillation;
- Long term risks of venous thromboembolism/embolism;
- Stroke / transient ischemic attack; and
- Coronary heart disease.
Our Central and Morpeth pharmacies hold vital palliative care medicines in stock, available quickly thanks to our extended opening hours. This ensures comfort and dignity for those receiving end-of-life care. Many other pharmacies don’t keep these medicines readily available, making this service a crucial lifeline for carers and palliative care providers who often need urgent access.
Carers and service providers are welcome to visit our participating sites with a valid prescription. We prioritise fast dispensing and maintain appropriate stock levels to meet urgent needs. We’re also here to provide any advice and support you may require in using these medicines.
Our expert pharmacists can provide advice, support, and treatment for a range of conditions—without needing to see your GP. This includes appropriate treatments, such as antimicrobials, for:
- Earache (ages 1 to 17 years)
- Impetigo (aged 1 year and over)
- Infected insect bites (aged 1 year and over)
- Shingles (aged 18 years and over)
- Sinusitis (aged 12 years and over)
- Sore throat (aged 5 years and over)
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women aged 16 to 64 years

We dispense all valid NHS prescriptions at our sites—whether large or small, for medical devices, special lines, or common medicines like statins. We accept paper prescriptions (of all forms) and electronic ones via the Electronic Prescription Service. With decades of combined experience, our expert teams provide advice on your medicines, including how they work and possible side effects.
By choosing us, you support local independent pharmacies and gain access to a wide range of services not always available elsewhere. Together, our sites process over 45,000 prescription items monthly. If you nominate us as your pharmacy, we can receive your prescriptions directly from your GP and dispense them quickly.

At all our pharmacies, we offer the locally commissioned sharps container service—making it easy and safe for you to manage your sharps. Simply bring your filled medicinal sharps boxes to any of our sites, and we’ll take care of the disposal while providing you with a new, empty container.
This service supports patients with ongoing conditions who rely on sharps, giving you convenient, worry-free access to safe sharps management.

Please note we can only exchange and accept small (1 Litre) Sharp Boxes for disposal. Larger boxes must be returned to their point of origin, and can be returned to Morpeth NHS centre.
Quit Smoking for Good with Our Local Support
It’s never too late to stop smoking, and our friendly, experienced team is here to help you succeed. Our stop smoking practitioners offer a free initial consultation to understand your health and motivations, and discuss the best quitting options for you.
Through follow-up consultations, we support your progress and can provide vouchers for Nicotine Replacement Therapy—such as patches, lozenges, and inhalators—which can be dispensed directly at our pharmacies. We also offer advice on other quitting methods tailored to you.
Our service supports both NHS referrals (e.g., from hospitals) and the Northumberland Stop Smoking Service, where patients can self-refer or book online. We can also provide certain prescription-only-medicine (Varenicline or Cytisine) after a consultation with our team, if you’re referred to us from your Stop Smoking Service.

We provide free Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea screening kits for anyone aged 13 to 24 at all of our pharmacies in Northumberland.
Collect your kit confidentially and easily, then complete it at home and send it off for testing. This convenient service helps you take control of your sexual health with privacy and support.
All our pharmacies offer a supervised consumption service, required for dispensing certain substitution therapies like Methadone or Buprenorphine.
Our Central Pharmacy features a specialist supervised consumption area and is open daily with extended hours Monday to Saturday for your convenience. At our other sites, supervised consumption takes place in our private consultation rooms.

We organise medicines into weekly dosette trays to help patients maintain compliance and improve quality of life. This service is free for those deemed eligible by our pharmacists, who assess each case individually to ensure it’s right for our patients. If not eligible, we can advise carers on how to assemble trays at home.

Our friendly, punctual delivery drivers bring your prescriptions every weekday — now using eco-friendly electric vans across all our pharmacies to reduce our environmental impact.

At Ashington Pharmacy, Northumberland, we offer professional ear wax removal using gentle microsuction technology (TympaHealth). This safe and effective treatment helps clear ear wax buildup to improve hearing and comfort. We also provide ear health checks to keep your ears in top condition.

We can provide continual stock of key medicines, complete ordering of any therapeutics or appliances required, safe storage, handling and disposal of medication, MDS sheets to keep track of medicines supplied, and thorough recordkeeping to assist our social care colleagues.

You can now recycle your pre-filled Novo Nordisk pens for diabetes and weight management through our pharmacies. You can pick up a free cardboard recycling recepticle when collecting your prescription. Once your pre-filled pen is empty and the needle is removed, you can place it into the recepticle, and once full either return this to our pharmacy, or pop it in the post using the freepost return label on the box. Recycling your Novo Nordisk pens gives them a new lease of life as, for example, furniture or glass – saving precious resources and greatly benefitting the environment.

We offer a private period delay service at select pharmacies to help you postpone your next period for important occasions or events. With our service, menstruation can be delayed for up to 14 days using medication, if eligible.

Our COVID-19 Vaccination service has delivered over 36,000 jabs to the region since we first opened our doors at the height of the pandemic in 2021.

We provide both:
- Autumn/Winter NHS COVID-19 Vaccinations (often provided alongside our NHS Flu Vaccination Service);
- Spring Booster NHS COVID-19 Vaccinations

Each year from Autumn, we support our community with the NHS-funded Flu Campaign. If you’re 65 or over, or 18+ with certain health conditions, you can get a free flu vaccination at our pharmacy. Our skilled pharmacists provide quick, friendly consultations—usually under 10 minutes. During flu season, we offer both bookable appointments and walk-ins.
You can also receive your Autumn/Winter NHS COVID-19 Vaccination at the same appointment, if eligible.
